Statue of Bitcoin Creator Satoshi Nakamoto Erected In Budapest

Crypto enthusiasts may see themselves making a pilgrimage to Hungary after a bronze statue of Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous founder of Bitcoin, was unveiled in Graphisoft Park, Budapest.

The physical statue depicts an unspecified, genderless individual in a hoodie emblazoned with the Bitcoin logo.

Created by sculptors Gergely Réka and Tamás Gilly, the statue features a reflective surface, to symbolise “We are all Satoshi.”

Statue of Satoshi Unveiled in Graphisoft Park

András Györfi, editor of Kripto Akadémia, conceived the Statue of Satoshi project in March 2021.

As stated on its website, the goal of the project was to “create a proper memorial for Satoshi, whoever he or she was, wherever he or she is right now.”

Graphisoft Park is home to several other contemporary art pieces. This includes statues of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, Hungarian teacher László Rátz, a Rubik’s Cube, and a WWI memorial.

Referencing these notable individuals commemorated around Graphisoft Park that he described as heroes, Györfi said: “The creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, fits in this group perfectly.”

“Whoever he or she was, Bitcoin creates value, and especially the technology behind bitcoin, blockchain, creates value.”

The statue is 175cm tall, a reference to Satoshi’s alleged birthday of 1975.

According to the Statue of Satoshi roadmap, the project will release a Satoshi Statue NFT in Fall 2021. Most NFTs exist on the Ethereum blockchain, so it is unclear where exactly the Bitcoin creator’s NFT will sit.

This celebration of the Bitcoin creator comes after Time Magazine named another notable cryptocurrency creator – Vitalik Buterin – among its 100 Most Influential People of 2021.
