CD Projekt Red may have put itself on the map with their success on The Witcher III, but they’ve also gained a lot of attention with their other open-world RPG, Cyberpunk 2077.
A sequel had been announced a few years back, and while it’s understandable that it would take years to develop, fans have just received an update on which phase Cyberpunk 2 is currently at.
Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Gets Update from CDPR’s CFO
In a recent earnings call for CD Projekt Red, chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz gave an update on the projects currently in development, one of which is the Cyberpunk sequel, which has been codenamed Project Orion.
In the update, Nielubowicz said (via game-wrecks.com), “A group of CD Projekt Red veterans, now assisted by freshly hired talented developers, is laying the groundwork for another Cyberpunk game.” The video also confirms that the game is currently in its planning phase—which could just mean everything is in pre-production—like conceptualizing the story and making the concept art.
The game will be in full development when the team starts making actual digital assets and starting production on other elements, such as levels and cutscenes.
Cyberpunk 2077’s Rocky Road
The hype for the release of Cyberpunk 2077 was at an all-time high around 2020, especially considering the success that CDPR had with The Witcher III. Unfortunately, after several delays, Cyberpunk 2077 still came out half-baked, resulting in one of the worst game launches in history. It got so bad that it even got pulled out of digital stores.
Flash forward to 2022. Cyberpunk had been receiving several patches to fix existing problems, but it was really the release of the Netflix series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners that had resulted in a huge influx of new players ready to jump into the world of Night City. Since most of the problems with the game during launch had been fixed, everyone was having a great time getting immersed in the world as CDPR had originally intended.
With Cyberpunk back, CDPR had decided to release one huge piece of DLC with Phantom Liberty, and the game had been dubbed by the community as ‘officially saved’.
Project Orion
With the game still in its ‘planning phase’, very little is known about the sequel to Cyberpunk. With the first game still trying to be accessible to the PS4 and Xbox One gen of consoles, fans are expecting the sequel will be going all out in exploiting the capabilities of new-gen platforms.
Though Cyberpunk may have been getting all the praise after it got ‘fixed’, there are still certain problems that players have with it—specifically the fact that they can’t see their characters when they’re playing the game. With Cyberpunk 2077 having such a huge focus on fashion and character customization, a lot of players thought that it was odd that players wouldn’t even get to see their characters for most of the game.
Fingers crossed that the sequel will remedy that, and then some.
Fans have no idea when CDPR will be ready to give a first look at the Cyberpunk sequel, but everyone is hoping that they manage to have a more successful launch this time around as compared to the cautionary tale which was the original launch for Cyberpunk 2077.
No official release date has been announced for Cyberpunk 2.
