All eyes are on Destiny 2 The Final Shape to deliver an epic finale to close the decade-long Light and Darkness saga that began with the original Destiny in 2014. After all this build-up, fans need a Big Bang to pay it off, and the new Final Shape trailer promises just that with the Witness destroying everything we hold dear.

With The Final Shape wrapping up such a winding story in one of the best FPS games, we all know someone is going to die. Rumors and theories have been floating around for months, even years now. However, this new trailer sets up several deaths - or fake-outs - and that’s not including the civilians of the Last City being diced up and turned into statues. Zavala, Ikora, the newly returned Cayde-6, and Crow are all in the Witness’ sights.

The trailer focuses on the Witness tempting Zavala towards the Darkness, with Ikora at one point pleading with him, potentially setting up the Vanguard leader for one final act of bravery. After the passing of Zavala’s original voice actor, Lance Reddick in March 2023, and the character’s story largely having wrapped up loose ends, it’s highly likely the shots we’re shown in the trailer are teasing something much bigger for the character. It’s possible that we’re seeing Zavala becoming one of the Witness’ Disciples.

However, there’s a much closer call than Zavala. Towards the end of the trailer Ikora, the Warlock Vanguard, is shot through the chest before unleashing a massive Nova Bomb in retaliation. With her Ghost by her side, this is more likely to be a fake-out - though that doesn’t mean her time won’t come.

We also see Cayde-6 and Crow in several sticky situations, whether it’s dodging debris or being surrounded by the Witness’ forces. But would they bring Cayde-6 back just to kill him again?

With Bungie promising an emotional narrative with not just epic trips into the Guardian’s journey but also gut-punching moments, you can bet at least one of these characters is going to bite the bullet. However, that’s arguably better than being split apart and turned into an exhibit, which is the Witness’ usual trick.

Overall, the Destiny 2 The Final Shape launch trailer, featuring tons of CGI cutscenes, sets up the expansion for one of, if not the most cinematic story yet for the Guardian.
