Days before Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 releases globally, developer Saber Interactive confirmed that the game will not have the Denuvo DRM and released a comprehensive FAQ.

The game will not have any digital rights management system but will include an anti-cheat service through Easy Anti Cheat. While having Easy Anti-Cheat is another matter, not adding Denuvo for Space Marine 2’s launch is music to the ears of many players.

What exactly is DRM, and why do so many gamers hate it?

Denuvo Aims To Prevent Software Tampering and Piracy

Released in 2014, Denuvo is a digital rights management system developed by Denuvo Software Solutions GmbH. It requires the games using it to be activated online.

According to Empress, a known Denuvo cracker, in an interview with Wired, Denuvo creates an authentication ticket unique to each game copy, comprising several information and factors such as the user’s hardware ID. This makes Denuvo an effective DRM but fairly difficult to crack. However, Denuvo is infamous among gamers for a different reason.

Denuvo Causes Performance Issues and Hardware Wear-and-Tear

Several hardware and performance issues plague Denuvo. From frame rate drops to high CPU usage, many claimed that Denuvo brings these issues, albeit preventing game piracy. Games such as Tekken 7 and Resident Evil Village suffered performance issues under Denuvo and were confirmed via several tests.

In 2021, several games using Denuvo became unplayable when a Denuvo domain expired. Players couldn’t access their purchased Denuvo-serviced games until the issue was resolved.

This then poses another dilemma: players are at the mercy of Denuvo as to when they can access their purchased games.

Denuvo Is a Publisher’s Boon But A Consumer’s Bane

Publishers may easily depend on Denuvo to aid them against piracy but consumers are the ones suffering from the DRM. In addition to its recent hardware issues, Denuvo would always require online authentication which may not make sense for single-player, offline games.

While the gaming industry is yet to find a balance between providing well-made games and finding the correct price point for these products, Denuvo is making it hard for consumers to be convinced that a DRM like itself has to be needed when purchasing games.
