From Genshin Impact to Honkai Star Rail, HoYoverse is frequently changing up its approach with each game. Naturally, this has raised questions about whether there is Zenless Zone Zero open-world exploration.

Zenless Zone Zero takes place in a world that's riddled with Hollows - reality-warping natural disasters that spawn waves of monsters bent on destruction. However, civilizations like New Eridu have found a way to traverse these Hollows and extract resources to thrive in this post-apocalyptic setting. That definitely sounds like something worth exploring in an open world.

Is Zenless Zone Zero Open World?

No, Zenless Zone Zero does not feature an open world for you to explore. ZZZ is actually more similar to a classic dungeon crawler, in which you explore a specific location. The main goal is to reach a series of portals, called Hollows, that feature a wide range of enemies to defeat and tasks to complete.

When you're not busy fighting and defeating enemies, you can rest in the hub which is the city of New Eridu. Here you can purchase items, such as food that will make your chances of survival in combat much higher. It's also possible to rewatch some of the cutscenes of the game as well.

Even the main story doesn't feature open exploration. During the story, you will go on individual missions, navigating around a TV like a board game. If you're looking for true exploration, like wandering around an open world or finding hidden chests, then you're largely out of luck.
