Debates in Metaphor: Refantazio is primarily used to increase the protagonist's Royal Virtues, particularly Eloquence, and Imagination. These debates occur at podiums found in various locations within the game world.

Debates are held at specific locations and times within the in-game calendar.
The in-game calendar advances as you play, so each day offers new activities, and you must manage your time wisely to avoid missing key events like debates.
There are three main regions where you will encounter debates: Martira, Port Brilehaven, and Altabury Heights.
In each area, you’ll find a podium where you’ll face off against another candidate by selecting dialogue options to refute their arguments.
Martira (Stairstone Market)

In total, if you win all the debates, you can expect to earn 33 Eloquence points and 7 Imagination points across all debates. You can still earn a smaller amount of progress in your Royal Virtues even if you lose.
But if you were to lose all the debates, the total amount of Eloquence you'd likely earn would be far less than winning all of them, likely around 8 to 16 Eloquence in total, and 0 Imagination points.
Winning debates not only grants stat bonuses but also contributes to story progression and helps unlock achievements. It also brings you closer to achieving the Debate Me trophy.
It’s important to stay aware of the in-game calendar because these debates can only be accessed on their specific dates. Planning your in-game days around these key events is important if you want to achieve full completion.
You won’t be overly restricted by time, and you can return to areas later if needed. However, missing out on certain dates (like the ones tied to debates) means you’ll need to wait for another playthrough to complete those events.
Although debates are time-sensitive, Metaphor: ReFantazio has a flexible time system. Unlike earlier Atlus games where missing a day could be punishing, here you have a bit more freedom.
