The original Fallout is a cult classic CRPG and fans can now play it on their Nintendo 3DS, assuming they have custom firmware for this handheld. It’s definitely more of a novelty than the best way to play this game, but fans should still get a kick out of this.
As reported by The Gamer, this was all made possible by a user named MrHuu, who was able to get this classic game running on his 3DS. Eurogamer has confirmed that this works fairly well, though it’s not a perfect port as changing the “mouse click” is done with the left shoulder trigger.
Even with all of that, 3DS owners who might not be too savvy with a PC can now play Fallout on their retro handheld system. It goes to show how great the modding and custom firmware community can be, if fans are passionate enough about their system.
Fans were initially depressed when Nintendo decided to stop supporting the online servers for the 3DS and Wii U. At the time of writing, there are still a number of classic eShop games that are stuck in this system with no way to play them legally. While fans can be critical about emulation, they do save games and give players a way to play them.
Seeing Fallout get ported to the 3DS is impressive, though not as impossible as once thought. Many fans have been able to port unique games to this handheld like Diablo, Doom, and even Sonic Mania. We wouldn’t be surprised if more surprise ports like this end up getting more attention.
Nintendo’s Switch might be their most successful system, but fans will always have a soft spot for the 3DS and its custom firmware achievements. The fact that gamers can play Virtual Boy games on their 3DS, complete with 3D features, shows just how passionate this community is.
