Fans have taken it upon themselves to take Grand Theft Auto 3 and bring it over to Sega’s final console. YouTuber Sega Guru has uploaded a video revealing a developer called SKMP has started working on the unofficial GTA 3 port for the Sega Dreamcast.
In the aforementioned video, Sega Guru shares footage released by SKMP to showcase the early stages of the project. Based on what the developer has shown so far, it’s easy to tell that we won’t be able to play the port any time soon. However, the simple fact that it’s being worked on is exciting for fans of both GTA 3 and the Sega Dreamcast.
Grand Theft Auto 3 made huge waves in the gaming industry when it was released for the PlayStation 2 back in 2001. Not only did it revitalize the Grand Theft Auto series and elevate Rockstar Games to new heights, but it also served as the blueprint for open-world titles for years to come.
What some may not know is that GTA 3 was originally being developed for the Sega Dreamcast. Unfortunately, the console was unable to find commercial success which led Rockstar Games to make the switch over to Sony’s gaming platform.
For those who wish to revisit Grand Theft Auto 3 but don’t have the patience to wait for the Dreamcast port, you’ll find the title as part of the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. This version of GTA 3 features updated graphics but a bunch of technical issues that weren’t around for the original could dampen your experience with the game. The compilation is available on PC and current-gent consoles.
