Is Take-Two looking too far forward? While Rockstar Games develops the hotly anticipated GTA 6, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is already hyping up an eventual GTA 7, even though its predecessor won't release until next year.

Rockstar Games' plans for the GTA 6 release date of Fall 2025 are seemingly going well, barring any unforeseen delays. Releasing 12 years after GTA V, the long-awaited sixth entry in the open-world crime series is expected to be Rockstar’s biggest game ever.

Despite the massive gap between releases, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is already planning for the eventual release of GTA 7 sometime in the far future. When asked about plans for the future, the executive simply said, “GTA 7.”

Fans of the iconic Rockstar Games franchise immediately balked at the idea of planning for a seventh entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, especially after the atrociously long wait for the upcoming sixth game to release.

In response to Zelnick’s proposal, one fan created an estimated timeline for a GTA 7 release date using previous GTA games’ release schedules as a basis. As the wait between entries grows exponentially larger, fans don’t expect GTA 7 to launch until sometime in the 2040s.

“At Rockstar’s current rate of releasing new GTA titles, GTA 7 won’t be out until at least 2049,” Twitter account GTA 6 Countdown said online.

This estimation gives Grand Theft Auto 7 a development timeline of 24 years. At the time of writing, Rockstar’s video game franchise has been running for 27 years, only 23 of which have been the full 3D open worlds fans are now used to.

Since its release in 2013, GTA V has become one of the most successful video games of all time. GTA V Weekly Updates keep the game going alongside major online content drops, providing a steady stream of content for multiplayer fans. However, Rockstar Games canceled GTA V Story DLCs, including a Secret Agent Trevor expansion, without explanation.

Hopefully, when Rockstar Games releases GTA 6, both its story mode and its online mode will receive consistent updates with new content.
