Breakdown

  • Marvel Rivals' Doctor Strange needs to be patched before the game's release
  • The character's portal spells are broken, letting him send numerous heroes to death via pitfall
  • It's a good thing Marvel Rivals is still in the beta phase

Marvel Rivals looks like it’s going to be a quality hero shooter, but Doctor Strange could be an annoying character to deal with. The devs at NetEase have implemented his powers a little too well, with beta fans discovering how cheap Strange can be.

A clip that emerged from Twitter showed Doctor Strange using a portal that can direct his enemies to pits, seemingly without them knowing. Based on the clip below, it seems that Strange can beat a ton of heroes like this if the portal isn’t patched.

Luckily, Marvel Rivals is still in the beta phase, so we assume that the character’s ability will be nerfed before its official release. The devs at NetEase can also block off these areas from character use, so that heroes like Strange can’t exploit this spell.

Since this new Marvel game is a hero shooter, we’re sure that the title will go through a rough patch with cheap characters and skills. Most hero shooters go through this cycle, as many Overwatch and Apex Legends players have complained about broken skills over the years. At the least, fans have already uncovered this broken skill and the devs can act accordingly so no one is bothered by this at launch.

While broken abilities can be annoying, it is good to see the devs of Marvel Rivals give these heroes plenty of cool abilities. Beyond Doctor Strange using his portals to send enemies to pits, Spider-Man can also crawl on most places, and Bruce Banner can turn into Hulk to deal huge damage. The fact that Rivals might launch with over 30 characters is impressive and we can’t wait to see more from this hero shooter.

At the time of writing, there is still no proper release date for the hero shooter, so only beta players can try it out. If it leads to a more polished title at release, fans can wait a bit longer for this title.

Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play shooter coming to PC later this year. Fans can also expect a release on current-gen platforms in the near future.
