Breakdown

  • MultiVersus is officially relaunching on May 28, 2024
  • The free-to-play Smash Bros clone will start with Season 1
  • This means that the game's original Season 1 content is no longer canon to its live-service narrative

After more than a year of being gone, Multiversus is coming back to PC and consoles, but the delisted Smash Bros clone is repeating itself. Warner Bros' free-to-play party fighter is starting fresh with Season 1, a season that was already covered when the game initially launched in open beta.

MultiverSusie, who has shared numerous leaks and datamines of the platform fighter, has revealed that it will indeed relaunch with a Season 1. While this is pretty laughable for most gamers, one could view this as a soft reboot or relaunch similar to comic books, though that still isn’t a great excuse. New 52, anyone?

Even with the annoying reboot, fans are just happy to have Multiversus back, as there’s still plenty of appeal in the game’s concept. Being able to pit Finn the Human or Shaggy against Batman or the Iron Giant is still pretty wild for most players.

There’s even more content coming, as the fighting game will be returning with Mark Hamill’s Joker as a new playable character. Joker even got a really cool trailer where he somehow took down a number of the Warner Bros. characters before facing off with his eternal rival: Batman.

It will be interesting to see who else gets added into Multiversus, as there are hundreds of characters Warner Bros. could add from their various properties. We already have characters from DC, Game of Thrones, Adventure Time, and more, which could make this an endlessly replayable fighter if Warner Bros. plays their cards right.

Considering how Warner Bros. is looking to invest in more live-service games, despite the massive failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Despite these games being out of fashion, it seems Warner Bros. wants to push through and find that one eternal bank account. Multiversus could be perfect for them, as fans would love more characters, costumes, and just fan service in general.

After months of silence, Multiversus is finally coming back to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC on May 28.
