The Rogue Prince of Persia clashed a bit with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, as both games started development around the same time. Rogue was forced to make some changes to make sure it didn’t mess with The Lost Crown’s earlier release date, but Evil Empire made it work.
Lucie Dewagnier, the Game Director of Evil Empire’s Rogue, spoke with Edge Magazine (via GamesRadar) and talked about some of the difficulties that came with both games’ development. Dewagnier said “they needed to change things” so it would differentiate itself from The Lost Crown but felt “it was for the best.”
Ubisoft also added some limitations to both games, as The Rogue Prince of Persia and The Lost Crown could not use daggers from The Sands of Time. While both games have some similarities with the iconic trilogy, it seems both games were advised not to use these iconic weapons. Luckily, Dewagnier was okay with this as the devs wanted to do something different with their roguelite title.
Many fans thought it was awkward when Ubisoft decided to release two 2D Prince of Persia games in the same year. Both games do play differently, as The Lost Crown is a Metroidvania and Rogue is, well, a roguelite, so they stand out from each other. Still, this decision probably confused some fans who thought there was only one 2D Prince of Persia coming out this year.
At the time of writing, The Rogue Prince of Persia is still in Early Access, though the game is already impressing folks with its artstyle and fast-paced gameplay. Critics and fans alike also enjoyed The Lost Crown, with many claiming it’s one of the best Metroidvania games since Metroid Dread.
For now, The Rogue Prince of Persia is only available through Steam via Early Access, though the game will likely come out on other systems after. In the meantime, fans who want a good Metroidvania can pick up The Lost Crown now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC.
