Developer Saber Interactive has canceled the upcoming beta for Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, disappointing many fans who were looking forward to trying it out. The devs will now focus on finishing this game, but it probably would have been better if they didn’t announce a beta to begin with.

According to a community update on Steam, the devs have opted not to run an open beta since it would distract devs from finishing the game. Since the action title was delayed and re-scheduled for release this September, the devs want to put all of their attention on polishing the game so its good for release.

“Space Marine 2 is almost ready. We are now entirely focused on optimization, polish and fixing remaining issues ahead of launch on September 9,” wrote Saber. “This means we will not run a public online beta, as it would take the development teams away from preparing for the full launch, and our priority is to ensure the best possible experience at release.”

The devs at Saber know that canceling this Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 beta will disappoint fans, so those who registered are getting a small treat. Fans who signed up for the beta before June 28 will get a free Bolt Pistol skin for their weapons. It’s not much, but we’re sure 40k fans will get a small kick out of it.

While being honest with the fans is always appreciated, one has to wonder why they even bothered with a beta. Granted, there are multiplayer modes, but a lot of fans are in it for the single-player so a beta isn’t that important. If anything, the devs should have released a demo to give fans a short taste of what’s to come.

Regardless of all that, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 looks like it’s going to be a pretty special game when it comes out on September 9. Improving on the original action game in every way, this looks like a dark horse candidate. Let’s hope the folks at Saber nail the landing.
