Iron Man might be an MCU icon these days, but the character has had a troubled history when it comes to video games. Before his horrible MCU games and the poorly-received Marvel’s Avengers, Tony Stark was going to star in an original Xbox title and it looks interesting, to say the least.

A milestone build demo of “The Invincible Iron Man” has surfaced, named after the character’s ongoing comic book series. Shared by Kevin Edwards on Twitter, the game has Tony in his Ultimate Comics getup blasting away foes in third-person action. To be honest, it doesn’t look that different from his movie tie-in games, which isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement.

Still, it’s fascinating to see early builds of these cancelled Marvel games, especially since these characters have been tied to the movies for so long. Keep in mind that this build is from 2003, so Tony Stark wasn’t even a household name like he is today.

We think it’s worth noting that there is a Game Boy Advance game called The Invincible Iron Man, so there’s a chance they were going to be released at the same time. Back in the day, multi-platform games would always come out for multiple systems, though the GBA titles barely got any advertising.

The MCU games from SEGA were considered poor quality back then and its hard to argue with that, since both titles were very unimaginative. Even though Marvel’s Avengers wasn’t received well, everyone controlled well, including Iron Man himself. It’s a shame that Avengers devolved into live-service action, since the game had great combat and a solid story that fans enjoyed.

Fans everywhere are now hoping that EA will be able to make the first great Iron Man game. Details on the game are still pretty minuscule, but various job listings have hinted at another open-world superhero title, which we won’t complain about. If it can be as good as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 or Batman: Arkham City, we will be very happy.
