Atlus' Metaphor: ReFantazio gives JRPG and Persona fans a thrill ride through The United Kingdom of Euchronia. Combining the classic turn-based combat seen from previous Persona and Shin Megami Tensei games with real-time action, Metaphor: ReFantazio could be the JRPG of the year with fantastic review scores from critics and other media sites.
Complete with a class system, dungeons, and an interesting set of characters, Metaphor: ReFantazio captures the essence of JRPGs and elevates it with its unique approach to storytelling. Players are against the clock to find the next king and will have to go through various locations to meet new friends and allies along the way while adding the challenge of balancing a healthy social life, just like the Persona games.
With the perfect JRPG formula, Atlus and Metaphor: ReFantazio now have universal acclaim with a 94 Metascore in Metacritic and a 98% critic recommendation score in Opencritic. Metaphor: ReFantazio is available on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. While Atlus had always included the Nintendo Switch for its JRPG releases, Switch fans will have to wait for Metaphor: ReFantazio to become available on the console, possibly as a Switch 2 console title.
While many Atlus games revolve around themes and metaphors, as seen in the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei games, Metaphor: ReFantazio setting seems too far from any high schools, similar to the Persona games of the past. Rather than the busy Tokyo student life, the game brings its cast to a kingdom far away, suffering from a power struggle due to the death of its king. Unfortunately for those fans of dating in Persona games, Metaphor: ReFantazio will not have any companion romance.
Metaphor: ReFantazio will also add social features from the iconic Atlus games, where players must strengthen their relationships with their allies and utilize Persona-like powers called Archetypes. Players will have to dungeon crawl during the day and socialize at night, navigating through the kingdom's politics and royal tournament for the throne.
Metaphor: ReFantazio will be released on October 11, and players can now start downloading a free demo that lets them experience the prologue of the story. Demo progress can be kept, and a new game will pick up where players left off in the demo, allowing them to continue their journey with the same character stats.
