It's been five years since Stardew Valley released, where it kept growing thanks to various updates it received over the years. However, the game's future may take a different direction.
Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, creator of Stardew Valley, mentioned in an interview with Zach “UnsurpassableZ” Hartman during the first Stardew Valley Cup about the possible future of the game. Asked whether it will receive further updates or not, Barone stated:
"I'm not saying there's going to be another Stardew Valley update. I don't even know at this point. Right now I am focused on my next game. So, we'll see."

No More Update 1.6?
That came up after Barone was asked whether they can allow players to marry the non-marriageable people, one's they can interact with in-game. He answered:
"To have someone become a marriage candidate, that means I have to add a lot of dialogue and at least two more events, and those events take a lot of time. It may seem like it's not that big of a deal, but they take a huge amount of time. There's a lot of other stuff - you have to make the spouse room. There's just a lot to it. So that's the reason why I haven't just added more marriage candidates. But there's no reason why I'm opposed to having more. I think it would be fun."
Stardew Valley’s latest update came last year with version 1.5, considered to be the game's biggest. That introduced some notable content, including the Beach Farm layout and Ginger Island location.
Though Barone speculates there might not be an update 1.6, he confirmed his new game could be announced ‘fairly soon." Right now, there's only minimal details, though we know it will be a pixel art game with a ‘top-down perspective similar to Stardew Valley.’
